BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Enhanced safety and health training for employees of businesses in the Greater Naugatuck Valley is the goal of a newly-signed alliance between the Bridgeport area office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Griffin Hospital Occupational Medicine Center (GHOMC). Under the alliance, the two will develop and deliver training and education programs for GHOMC client businesses, including manufacturing, retail, health care and other industries, in the Greater Naugatuck Valley region. The alliance partners will also work jointly to develop additional safety and health training on topics identified through participant surveys developed and administered by GHOMC. "This alliance takes a proactive approach to equipping workers and employers in the Naugatuck Valley with the knowledge and tools to identify and prevent workplace hazards," said Robert W. Kowalski, OSHA's Bridgeport area director. "The occupational medical center's surveys will help us tailor training to those topics and subjects where the interest and need are greatest." OSHA and GHOMC will share information on best practices and effective approaches to workplace safety and health. GHOMC clients will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs, including the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Signing the alliance were OSHA's Kowalski and David Maffei, PA-C, program director, GHOMC. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
