FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and chapters of the National Safety Council have formed alliances to reduce worker injuries at warehousing and distribution centers in South Florida. Representative from the Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa OSHA area offices and the National Safety Council chapters --- Broward, Dade, Palm Beach and Southwest --- recently signed four alliances, at the Disaster Survival House, Deerfield Beach, Fla. "Working together, we can help employers and employees recognize and reduce safety and health hazards at warehouses and distribution centers," said Luis Santiago, OSHA's Ft. Lauderdale area director. "Proper maintenance and operation of forklifts, clear aisles and ready access to emergency exits are just a few of the safety topics that will be addressed by the alliance," Santiago said. Workers will have access to safety material and training in English and Spanish. During the signing ceremony, the National Safety Council chapter members and the OSHA office staff acknowledged the integral part played by Florida's state Consultation Project in this effort to reduce workplace hazards. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. OSHA has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
