WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) formed an Alliance today with the International Society of Canine Cosmetologists (ISCC) that focuses on hazard communication issues and preventing exposure to ergonomic hazards for pet care professionals. "Aligning with the ISCC enables us to work closely with the pet care industry on targeting hazardous areas that these professionals are likely to encounter," said Jonathan L. Snare, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. "We'll use our joint expertise to provide pet care professionals with training and knowledge that will help them stay safe and healthy on the job." "Our organization has always been in the vanguard of education for pet care professionals," stated Pam Lauritzen, ISCC Executive Director. "ISCC members strive to promote and educate pet care professionals in the significance of safety and health within their workplace. We believe that the Alliance of ISCC with OSHA will form a winning combination that will attain an unparalleled standard of excellence for the safety and health of pet care professionals." Through the Alliance, OSHA and ISCC will provide the organization's members and others in the pet care industry, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to ergonomic hazards and addressing hazard communication issues in the workplace. OSHA and the ISCC will jointly develop workplace safety and health curricula and materials on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and provide expertise in developing ways of communicating the information to employers and employees in the industry. The organizations will participate in forums, round table discussions, and stakeholder meetings. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
