New OSHA Alliance Focuses on Safety and Health of Vietnamese-American Workers in Western Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Enhancing safe and healthful working conditions for Vietnamese-American workers in western Massachusetts is the goal of a newly-signed alliance between the Springfield area office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Springfield branch office of Boat People SOS.

The two organizations will develop training and education programs for Vietnamese-American workers, including at least four educational workshops annually. The training will focus on reducing and preventing workers' exposure to chemicals hazards, falls, struck-by, caught-between and electrical hazards and other unsafe acts or hazards they may encounter while working in a variety of jobs.

"This alliance will allow us to reach a growing community of workers in western Massachusetts," said Ronald E. Morin, OSHA's Springfield area director. "Our goal is to provide Vietnamese-American workers with information and training that will help them identify and eliminate hazards before they harm workers."

Boat People SOS will also be encouraged to build relationships with OSHA's regional and area offices and to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

Boat People SOS is a nationwide community organization that seeks to empower, equip and organize Vietnamese-American communities in their progress towards self-sufficiency and integration. The organization provides relief, assistance and support to Vietnamese refugees and immigrants and collaborates with organizations, agencies and ethnic communities that share similar visions, goals and values.

The alliance was signed Aug. 15 in Springfield by Morin and Khanh Nguyen, manager, Boat People SOS, Springfield branch office. For a photograph of the signing, e-mail fitzgerald.edmund@dol.gov.
