New Maine Alliance Aimed at Telecom Job Safety

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Safe and healthful working conditions for Maine's telecommunications workers is the goal of a newly signed alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Maine's "Safety Works" consultation program, the Maine Department of Transportation (Maine DOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Society of Cable Telecommunication Engineers (SCTE).

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. SCTE is a non-profit association dedicated to advancing the careers of cable telecommunications professionals and serving the industry through professional development, information and standards.

"Telecommunications workers' duties expose them to such hazards as falls, contact with energized cables or being struck by traffic," said Anthony Lemire, OSHA's acting area director for Maine. "This alliance is a combined effort to equip workers in Maine's cable industry with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify and prevent these hazards."

Alliance participants will develop and deliver training and education programs on roadway work zone and telecommunications safety and health issues to employees and subcontractors working for the state's cable companies. This will include OSHA's 10- and 30-hour general industry safety and health courses. They also will promote SCTE members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

Signing the alliance June 22 in Augusta were OSHA's Lemire; David E. Wacker, director of the Workplace Safety and Health Division of the Maine Department of Labor; Jonathan McDade, administrator of the Maine Division of the FHWA; David A. Cole, commissioner of the Maine DOT; and William Desrochers, president of the Lighthouse Chapter of SCTE.

OSHA has created more than 300 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. For more information about this and other alliances in the state of Maine, call OSHA's Augusta office at (207) 626-9160.
