BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Better safety and health for workers in Western New York industries is the goal of a new, multifaceted alliance between the Buffalo office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Erie Community College's (ECC) Department of Workforce Development/Corporate Training. "This effort is particularly exciting because of its breadth and scope," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "It will allow us to direct resources to those workers and workplaces that can most benefit from learning to identify and eliminate hazards before workers are hurt." The alliance will focus on workers and industries most in need of safety and health information. These include young or inexperienced workers; workers for whom English is a second language; companies that use anhydrous ammonia in refrigeration systems and other high hazard workplaces; public warehousing and storage; and workers in construction, landscape/horticultural, fruit and vegetable preservation, concrete, gypsum, and plaster. Alliance members will encourage bi-lingual individuals to complete OSHA's train-the-trainer courses for general industry and construction so they can qualify to teach Hispanic workers. Employers who use ECC's workforce development or corporate training programs will be encouraged to build relationships with OSHA's area and regional offices and to participate in the agency's cooperative programs, including the Voluntary Protection Program, safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement recognition Program (SHARP). A formal signing ceremony to launch the alliance took place last month at the Western New York Safety Conference in Grand Island, NY. Signatories were Clark and Art Dube, OSHA's area director in Buffalo; William J. Mariani, president of ECC; Carrie W. Kahn, executive dean of ECC's Department of Workforce Development/Corporate Training; and Erie County Attorney James Tuppen. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
