SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Improving job safety and health for TSA employees at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and other airports in Puerto Rico is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration (TSA). "This alliance is a good example of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all employees," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator for Region 2, which includes Puerto Rico. "It is a great opportunity to advance a culture of injury and illness prevention among TSA employees in Puerto Rico." The alliance includes the development and delivery of training sessions addressing hazards encountered by TSA employees during the performance of their regular duties. The training will encompass airport passenger screening and baggage handling issues, with an emphasis on reducing and preventing TSA workers' exposure to ergonomic, struck-by, crushed-in, electrical, and fall hazards. TSA will also include employees from Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla and Eugenio Maria De Hostos Airport in Mayaguez in the outreach and training sessions. Approximately 586 TSA employees are employed in Puerto Rico. The Transportation Security Administration protects the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. Signing the alliance were Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator; federal OSHA's Puerto Rico area director, José A. Carpena; and for TSA, Frederick Baraga, acting federal security director, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. OSHA has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
