TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Improving workplace safety and health for Hispanic workers is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Westchester Hispanic Coalition Inc. (WHC). Through the alliance, OSHA's Tarrytown office and the WHC will develop Spanish-language training and education programs on safety in general industry and construction. These programs will serve WHC members and others who are exposed to such workplace hazards as falls, amputations, electrical hazards, or being struck by or caught in-between objects. "OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Our goal is to provide Westchester County's Hispanic workers with the knowledge and skills to identify and protect themselves against hazards that can cause injury or death." "Training will include OSHA's 10- and 30-hour construction and general industry courses presented in Spanish," said Diana Cortez, OSHA's Tarrytown area director and Hispanic outreach coordinator for the New York region. "In addition, bi-lingual individuals will be encouraged to attend OSHA's train-the-trainer courses so they can qualify to teach the OSHA 10- and 30-hour courses in Spanish." The WHC, a community-based organization, serves the greater Westchester County area. It helps Hispanic residents with immigration, housing, employment, document translation, health and nutrition. Some of the programs WHC is developing include English-as-a-second language courses and seminars on employment topics such as how to complete a job application, interviewing skills and worker rights. Signing the alliance were Clark, Cortez, and Graciela Heymann, president of the Westchester Hispanic Coalition.
