North American Occupational Safety and Health Week WASHINGTON- Each year employers, communities, individuals and organizations are urged to participate in North American Occupational Safety (NAOSH) Week. Today, in Washington, D.C., the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), kicked off this year's event aimed at increasing public awareness of injury and illness prevention in the workplace. The event supports OSHA's Alliance with ASSE that aims to advance a culture of prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge. "This is the perfect opportunity to focus on our shared goals of preventing injury and illness in the workplace - especially for young workers and Spanish-speaking workers," said Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jonathan L. Snare. "Together, we will identify ways to improve the safety and health of hard-to-reach workers and provide teens, their parents and their employer's the tools they need to protect our next generation of workers." Held each May, NAOSH Week is a joint venture between the United States, Canada and Mexico that raises awareness of occupational safety, health and environmental programs among employers, employees and the public. The goal of NAOSH Week is to increase the understanding of the benefits of investment in occupational safety and health, and to encourage new health, safety and environmental activities. OSHA' national and regional offices and a work group of federal agencies called FedNet will hold special events throughout the week, including Teen Worker Safety Exhibits. In 2004, OSHA and ASSE renewed an Alliance that was originally signed in 2002 to promote safe and healthful working conditions. Since then, the two organizations have worked collaboratively to share best practices and technical knowledge. "We are very pleased to be part of an Alliance with OSHA and of their support for NAOSH Week," said American Society of Safety Engineers President Gene Barfield, CSP. "NAOSH Week is another tool we use to get information out regarding work-related risks to prove that it's no accident when tragedies don't occur." Also in attendance at Monday's event were representatives from other OSHA Alliance participants, including American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS). National winners of ASSE's "Be Safe at Work" Kids' 2005 Poster Contest were recognized, including Siena Mayer-Costa (NJ), second runner-up in the 5 and 6 year old category; Daniel Hales (NC) first runner-up in the 7 and 8 year old category; Cailey Lord (KY), winner in the 7 and 8 year old category; and 2004 poster contest winner Brady McCullion (DC). Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
