STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Helping Hispanic workers in Staten Island's construction and landscaping industries protect themselves against occupational hazards is the goal of a newly signed alliance among the Avenel, N.J., area office of the U.S. Labor Department 's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), local community organizations, Project Hospitality Inc. and El Centro de Hospitalidad. "OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Our goal is to advance safety and health awareness within Staten Island's Hispanic worker community." "This alliance will focus on preventing Hispanic workers' exposure to construction and landscaping hazards, including falls, cave-ins, electrical and struck-by hazards, sprains, strains and other trauma," said Robert Kulick, OSHA's Avenel area director. Alliance members will develop and deliver training in both Spanish and English to members of El Centro de Hospitalidad and other Hispanic day laborers. This will include giving out safety and health materials at Project Hospitality and El Centro de Hospitalidad meetings and other community forums, making reference materials available to day laborers in both languages, and improving access to safety and health training resources.
