WASHINGTON -- Reducing exposure to hand and back hazards is the focus of an Alliance signed today between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Association of Energy Service Companies (AESC) that aims to advance worker safety and health in the oil and gas well services industry. "This is a great opportunity to advance a culture of injury and illness prevention among workers in the oil and gas well industry," said Jonathan L. Snare, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. "Our Alliance is the beginning of what we hope will be a continuing relationship in which we can utilize our joint resources and expertise to help make this industry as safe and healthy as possible." "The AESC, along with it's 444 member companies, will work together with OSHA to enhance and build upon existing training and educational goals, outreach and communication goals and workplace health, safety and environmental goals within the oil and gas well service sector of the energy industry," said Ken Gates, AESC President. "We are positive that this Alliance will enable us to work together in order to benefit our communities and companies." AESC will work with OSHA to develop training and education programs on hand and back hazards for well site services employees. They will also provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards and on ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and AESC's Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry. The Alliance also calls for AESC to share information with OSHA personnel as well as industry safety and health professionals about AESC best practices and to publicize results through outreach by AESC and through OSHA- or AESC-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures. Established in 1956, the association originally represented oil well servicing contractors. In 1996, the association changed its name to the Association of Energy Service Companies to reflect the increase of energy industry service providers as members. The association's members include: field crews, engineers, manufacturers, oil and gas producers/operators, equipment providers and trucking service providers. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
