OSHA and Southwest Cabinet Makers Association, El Paso, Form Alliance to Promote Safety and Health

EL PASO, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today formed an alliance with Southwest Cabinet Makers Association, El Paso. Member companies, who manufacture and install cabinets and countertops, employ about 100 workers, most of whom are of Hispanic descent.

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers.

"This alliance will provide opportunities to build trust, provide information about best practices and leverage resources to maximize worker safety," said John Miles, OSHA's Dallas regional administrator and head of the agency's taskforce to foster job safety and health among Hispanic workers.

Alliances enable organizations to collaborate with OSHA to prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace. They are a means for participating organizations to network with others committed to workplace safety and health and exchange information about addressing hazards such as preventing falls and electrocutions.

The Southwest Cabinet Makers Association is currently comprised of nine companies involved in residential and commercial construction. The one-year agreement is a means for association members to participate in OSHA's cooperative and compliance assistance programs. It also encourages client companies to build relationships with OSHA's regional and area offices in addressing safety issues.

For more information on this alliance or about forming an alliance or partnership with OSHA's Lubbock area office, call (806) 472-7681.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 240 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
