BATON ROUGE -- Furthering the safety and health of electrical workers in Louisiana is the goal of an alliance signed by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Electrical Contractors Association Inc. (NECA), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 130 (IBEW) and the Louisiana Department of Labor. OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. The new state alliance is an opportunity for OSHA and members of the electrical community to increase awareness of these issues in the industry. Training will be made available through the New Orleans Electrical Safety Education Plan, a joint training program developed by the NECA and the IBEW. "OSHA's alliances provide trade, professional organizations, businesses, labor organizations and education institutions with an opportunity to participate in a voluntary cooperative relationship with OSHA for training and outreach," said Greg Honaker, OSHA area director in Baton Rouge. IBEW Local 130 represents approximately 1,200 electrical workers. NECA is an association of 15 electrical companies that work in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. Alliances enable organizations to collaborate with OSHA to prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace. They are a means for participating organizations to build trust, nework with others committed to workplace safety and health, and exchange information about best practices for addressing hazards. Members of each organization and OSHA will form an implementation team. They will develop a plan of action based on mutually agreed upon working procedures, and identify roles and responsibilities for the participants. Through quarterly meetings they will track and share information about activities and results in achieving the alliance's goals.
