OSHA and Athens Technical College's Safety Academy Form Alliance to Train Students in Safe Work Practices
Alliance Signing Ceremony Scheduled for December 15, in Athens, Ga.

ATLANTA -- Training students, employers, and employees to recognize and reduce safety and health hazards at the workplace is the goal of an alliance to be signed Dec. 15 by Athens Tech's Safety Academy and the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Training courses, workshops and presentations will focus on reaching non-English speaking and young workers enrolled at the college as well as Athens Tech's business partners and their employees. Topics will include hazards associated with forklifts, electrical equipment, machine guarding and chemicals. Instruction will also be given on procedures for rendering machinery inoperable during repair and maintenance, and the proper handling of bloodborne pathogens.

"The alliance is part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve worker safety and health through cooperative partnerships," said Gei-Thae Breezley, OSHA's Atlanta-East area director.

Breezley added that working together, the alliance can reach more workers and provide them with the information they need to eliminate hazardous conditions at their work sites.
