Painting, Construction and Home Restoration Workers NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Improving safety and health for workers in Connecticut's painting, construction and home restoration industries is the goal of a new alliance between the Bridgeport office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New Haven Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA-NHC). OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. Signing the alliance were Robert W. Kowalski, OSHA's area director for southwestern Connecticut, and James Rumberger, president of the PDCA's New Haven chapter. "Workers in painting, construction and home restoration face hazards associated with falls, scaffolding, electricity and exposure to lead, silica and asbestos," Kowalski said. "This alliance will give members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America and others, particularly small businesses, better access to safety information, guidance and training resources." Under the alliance OSHA and PRDC-NHC will develop and deliver training and education programs on hazard prevention. They will share information about the best practices used by contractors to identify and correct safety problems and encourage PDCA-NHC work sites to build relationships with OSHA area and regional offices to address safety and health issues. OSHA and the local chapter will also convene and take part in forums, roundtables or stakeholder meetings and promote participation by PDCA-NHC members and worksites in OSHA's cooperative programs.
