CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Furthering the safety and health of oil and gas industry workers in south Texas is the goal of an alliance signed between the Corpus Christi area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the South Texas Exploration and Production Safety (STEPS) Network. OSHA's alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. "This is an opportunity for OSHA and members of Corpus Christi's oil and gas industry to come together through forums, roundtable discussions, meetings and conferences to discuss safety and health issues associated with production, drilling and transportation operations," said John Giefer, OSHA area director in Corpus Christi. "The cooperative working relationship between STEPS and OSHA has resulted in fewer fatalities in the oil and gas industry in the Corpus Christi area office jurisdiction." The STEPS Network which began a year ago is an association of employers from the oil and gas industry whose members work for a variety of companies and who work together to promote safety and health. The alliance between OSHA and STEPS is designed to raise awareness of oil and gas related hazards, improve safety and health training and encourage participants to join in cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program). To assist in these goals, the alliance has enlisted the help of the Texas Worker's Compensation Commission, Consultation Project. Alliances enable organizations committed to workplace safety and health to collaborate with OSHA. They provide opportunities to build trust, exchange information about best practices, and leverage resources to maximize worker safety.
