Form Alliance to Prevent Trenching Accidents
Signing Ceremony Scheduled for Sept. 14, in Marietta ATLANTA -- A concentrated effort to reduce trenching accidents in the Metro Atlanta area gets underway with a signing ceremony Sept. 14, in Marietta, Ga., by members of S.A.F.E. - the Safety Awareness Facilitation Education Alliance. Between Oct. 1, 1999 and Sept. 14, 2004, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated 21 fatal trenching accidents in the Metro Atlanta area. "This alliance demonstrates a commitment by Georgia utility industry leaders, the fire search and rescue teams and educators to protect utility workers by reducing trenching and excavation hazards," said Andre Richards, OSHA Atlanta-West area director. S.A.F.E. participants include the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Georgia Tech Research Institute, Safety, Health and Environmental Technology Division; Georgia Hispanic Contractors Association; Georgia Utility Contractors Association, Inc.; and fire department search and rescue teams from The City of Atlanta, Clayton County, DeKalb County, Cobb County, Fulton County and Gwinnett County. The voluntary, cooperative alliance will promote safe work practices and provide trenching and excavation safety training to employers and employees. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships.
