BISMARCK, N.D. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education (DCTE) have signed an alliance on behalf of high schools and postsecondary institutions in the state. The goal of the alliance, signed on July 29, 2004, and in effect for two years, is to develop training and education programs that integrate safety and health education into the curriculum of career and technical programs. The alliance will provide information, guidance and access to training resources to help protect students and employees' health and safety and, in particular, reduce and prevent exposure to hazards associated with the building and trades industry. "DCTE has demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and health," said Bruce Beelman, OSHA area director in Bismarck. "The education and well-being of our youth are of utmost importance. Through this alliance we will address OSHA's goal of reducing fatalities, injuries and illnesses in the workplace." OSHA will share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding DCTE's best practices or effective approaches. Results will be publicized through outreach by DCTE and OSHA along with such organizations as the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Home Builders Association (HBA) and trade unions. "The alliance formed between our agencies expands our industry partnerships to a higher level which will provide positive and safe results for North Dakota students," said Wayne Kutzer, director of the Department of Career and Technical Education. "Best practices will be introduced to educational programs through joint projects that address specific safety protocols for a variety of industry applications." DCTE provides workforce education and training delivery to North Dakotans through high schools, college and adult programming along with career awareness, work readiness skills, occupational preparation and retraining of workers. Career and technical education span all levels, providing youth with exploration opportunities and foundation skills needed to enter the work world, while providing adults with skills needed to enter, re-enter or advance in the workforce. A team including representatives of OSHA's Bismarck area office and DCTE members will meet regularly to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. Since 2001, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
