Chavez Office: (617) 565-2075 OSHA Forms Workplace Safety and Health Alliance With SPPAPR in Puerto Rico SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Improving workplace safety and health for workers in Puerto Rico is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Sociedad de Profesionales de Prevención de Accidentes (SPPAPR) by its English acronym, or Society of Professionals for the Prevention of Accidents. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. The purpose of the alliance is to provide members of the SPPAPR and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. Assistance will also be provided to members and nonmembers on implementing effective accident prevention programs at their worksites. "This alliance is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve the health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's Regional Administrator in New York. "We want to help educate employers and their workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job." The SPPAPR is a professional safety not-for-profit organization founded in 1952 and incorporated in Puerto Rico in 1955. It consists of over 400 members from the public, private and federal sectors. Since its foundation, the society has been instrumental in promoting awareness on issues concerning occupational safety and health. The mission of the society is to offer high-quality training for the development of professionals with expertise in the area of accident prevention. They conduct an annual one-day conference and offer four training seminars throughout the year. The alliance signatories will work together to deliver safety and health training programs related to fall protection, confined spaces, indoor air quality, noise exposure, workplace violence and ergonomics. Since 2001, the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
