Ergonomics issues, motor vehicle safety, youth workers focus of agreement WASHINGTON -- One of the oldest and largest professional safety organizations in the nation renewed its Alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration today in Las Vegas. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) joined with OSHA Administrator John Henshaw to formally extend the Alliance for two additional years during a signing ceremony following Henshaw's keynote address at ASSE's 2004 Professional Development Conference. "The Alliance we signed with ASSE in December 2002 encouraged our organizations to work together and use our collective expertise to advance safer and more healthful American workplaces," Henshaw said. "We're encouraged by the successes already realized, and we're pleased that ASSE wants to continue moving this effective association even further for the betterment of worker health and safety." Added ASSE President James Kendrick, CSP: "The results of the Alliance to date -- better communications, a greater understanding of the unique roles our members and OSHA staff play, and a mutual advancement of professionalism -- can only help make America's workplaces safer and healthier. Over the next year and beyond, we look forward to building similar practical, meaningful opportunities to advance these and other issues together." As a direct result of the Alliance, ASSE established a member-driven ergonomics task force of leading ergonomics practitioners and researchers. Additionally, the Association developed a list of links to ergonomic resources for its website. During ASSE's 2003 and 2004 Professional Development Conferences, a Mentoring Session was held for OSHA staff on achieving professional safety and health certification. ASSE also participated in OSHA's Second Annual Compliance Assistance Conference last June. The Alliance has also spawned local agreements between OSHA Regional and Area Offices and Association chapters in New England, the Gulf Coast and Atlanta. For instance, more than 750 teens attended a recent YouthRules! job and safety fair in Houston jointly sponsored by OSHA, ASSE and several companies. In addition to ergonomics and motor vehicle safety, the renewal calls for OSHA and ASSE to focus efforts on non-English speaking and youth workers. During the coming year, both organizations will work together to develop programs, distribute information and advance awareness of safety issues for these workers. Formed in 1911 and based in Des Plaines, IL, ASSE consists of approximately 30,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members, who manage, supervise research and consult on safety, health, transportation and environmental issues in all industries, government, labor and education. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
