SEATTLE -- Promoting safer and more healthful responses to emergencies by sharing best practices, technical knowledge, expertise and resources is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the United States Army Garrison, Fort Lewis (FLWA), in Washington state. OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. Richard Terrill, OSHA regional administrator in Seattle said, "This alliance will allow OSHA and the U.S. Army, Fort Lewis, to combine our resources and expertise to ensure that emergency response operations are carried out safely." Colonel Michael K. Stephenson, Garrison Commander, Fort Lewis, will sign the alliance documents on behalf of the U.S. Army. Under the alliance, OSHA and FLWA will develop training and education programs to improve emergency response safety and health programs and activities. FLWA leaders and employees will receive guidance for reducing and preventing employees' exposure to hazards during training and emergency response operations. They will also gain more access to safety and health training resources. Working together, OSHA and FLWA will identify top priorities for developing emergency response safety and health training and outreach programs. OSHA and FLWA Safety Office personnel will cross train in best practices for emergency response operations and other areas of mutual interest. Through the alliance, FLWA-affiliated organizations will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs, and Fort Lewis leaders will be encouraged to act as mentors to other regional federal agencies that aspire to excellence in emergency response safety and health. OSHA and FLWA will promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health by participating in forums to discuss injury and illness trends and common emergency response operational hazards. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
