Region 2 News Release: Release No. 04-523-NEW Wednesday, March 25, 2004 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Office: (215) 861-5102 OSHA Aligns with "Little School and More" to Protect Local Hispanic Workers PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Providing Hispanic workers with solid safety and health training for jobs in the construction industry is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Little School and More (LSM). The two organizations formalized the alliance at a recent signing ceremony. OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, community groups and employers. Located in Palisades Park, N.J., the LSM provides educational and social services to Latino workers in Hudson and Bergen counties. "Too often, language and cultural barriers are at the root of workplace accidents involving Spanish-speaking workers," says Pat Clark, OSHA regional administrator. "By working with Little School and More, we can provide safety and health information that will help to keep workers safe on the job." Under the OSHA-LSM alliance, the two organizations will develop training and education programs in Spanish on specific safety and health topics, such as fall protection, electrical safety, handling hazardous materials and machine guarding. They will develop and deliver OSHA's 10-hour construction safety course to Latino workers in Spanish and work together to develop and disseminate translated safety and health information to Latino workers. The Hasbrouck Heights and Parsippany OSHA area offices will participate in this alliance, which will remain in effect for two years. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
