NEW YORK -- Improving workplace safety and health for Upstate New York workers is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Safety Council of Upstate New York, Inc., and the New York State Department of Labor's On-Site Consultation Program (NYS Consultation). OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. The purpose of the alliance is to provide members of the Safety Council of Upstate New York, Inc., a Chapter of the National Safety Council and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. A particular emphasis is placed on workplace violence, motor vehicle safety and highway work zone safety. Four OSHA area offices will take part in this alliance: Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Tarrytown. "This alliance is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "We want to help educate Upstate New York workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job." The alliance signatories will work together to ensure the delivery of safety and health training programs related to workplace violence and security in health care and related settings, occupational motor vehicle safety and work zone flagger safety. They will also promote related training and educational programs through various outreach and communications efforts. NYS Consultation will provide resources to support the priority training and technical assistance needs of the participants of this alliance. Since 2001, the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 140 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
