OSHA Signs Alliance with Health Physics Society
Will focus on radiological safety and health issues

WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has joined with the Health Physics Society (HPS) to highlight safety and health issues for workers exposed to radiological hazards.

The Alliance unites HPS and OSHA on efforts to assist employers and employees in developing a preventive focus for radiological safety and health hazards in workplace environments, particularly related to emergency preparedness.

"We're pleased to be able to work with the Health Physics Society on emerging occupational radiological safety and health issues in the workplace," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "By drawing on the expertise of HPS members, together we can make positive strides in identifying and controlling radiological hazards in the workplace."

"The Health Physics Society is pleased to join with OSHA in the Alliance to build awareness of, to promote, and to encourage radiation safety in the workplace," added Kenneth R. Kase, HPS President. "A key objective through this Alliance is to develop information on the specific skills, knowledge, abilities, and processes that permit radiation safety professionals to contribute most effectively to excellence in safety and health performance."

OSHA and HPS will provide OSHA's Training Institute with educational and training materials and resources on radiological safety, and provide peer review of OSHA technical documents and training curricula on topics relevant to radiological safety issues.

Both organizations will also identify existing and emerging safety and health issues in the field and share technical information and best practices regarding radiological safety. HPS will also identify individuals with the Society who have expertise on specific radiological safety issues, to serve as direct points of contact with the agency.

The Alliance also calls for OSHA and HPS to encourage employers to incorporate radiological safety strategies into their overall safety and health programs. Both organizations will disseminate information through various media, including electronic assistance tools and links from their respective websites addressing ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Participation in forums, conferences and other events that address radiological safety issues is also a key part of the Alliance.

Finally, OSHA and HPS will work with other Alliance Program participants on specific issues and projects on radiological safety and will also share information about international regulations and guidelines relevant to radiological safety.

Formed in 1956, HPS is a scientific professional organization of approximately 6,000 scientists, physicians, engineers, attorneys and other professionals that encourages research in radiation science, developing standards, and disseminating radiation safety information.
