Region 1 USDL 03-938-BOS /BOS 2004-015 Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Contact: Ted Fitzgerald Phone: (617) 565-2074 New OSHA-CSA Alliance Takes Aim At Construction Hazards BOSTON, Mass. -- A new partnership between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New England construction industry is aimed at reducing on-the-job injuries and addressing common safety and health hazards. Marthe B. Kent, OSHA's New England regional administrator and Joseph A. Dart, president of the Labor-Management Construction Safety Alliance (CSA), which includes unions, contractors, trade associations, government agencies, insurers, suppliers, users and related professionals, officially formed the alliance during a signing ceremony in Boston. "OSHA health and safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships," said Kent. "They are a valuable tool that foster voluntary, cooperative relationships with OSHA for education, outreach, and communication and to promote a national dialogue on workplace safety and health." Under the OSHA-CSA alliance, the two will develop educational programs and seminars for building trades employers and workers on health and safety issues such as electrical shock prevention, excavation techniques, scaffolding and crane operation. They will also make available OSHA's 10-hour construction industry outreach program and the OSHA 500 trainer course in construction safety and health standards. In addition, OSHA and CSA will develop and disseminate safety and health information through conferences, exhibits, print and electronic media, including electronic assistance tools and web site links. They will cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals in CSA's best practices and will encourage CSA members to participate in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Program, the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program and other OSHA initiatives. A team representing both organizations will develop an action plan, determine working procedures and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants, meeting at least quarterly to track and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. The agreement will remain in effect for two years. OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life.
