Focus continues on areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection and ergonomics WASHINGTON -- An Alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and an engineering and construction management firm is a positive work in progress and both organizations want it to continue. OSHA Administrator John Henshaw signed a two-year renewal Dec. 19 for the Washington Group International Alliance to provide even more opportunities for continued achievement in advancing workplace safety and health. "We said a year ago that together we could make a difference for the safety and health of workers in the construction and engineering industries -- and we're doing just that," Henshaw said. "The impact of our Alliance with Washington Group has been far reaching. It's a program with momentum and one we both want to keep moving forward." The renewal calls for a continuing safety and health focus in the areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection, and ergonomics. The past year has seen a marked increase in the numbers of workers receiving the company's safety supervisor training and training in OSHA's course for the construction industry. In fact, Washington Group has presented their Safety Qualified Supervisor Training to OSHA personnel from the National Office in Washington, as well as from the Denver and Seattle regions. Under the Alliance, Washington Group representatives provided training to a group of thirty high school technical teachers in Boston last August and, with help from the Boise, ID Area Office, taught preparatory classes for students seeking Associate Safety Professional/Certified Safety Professional designations. Those classes included economics of safety, ergonomics and engineering fundamentals. Washington Group was the site sponsor for Associated General Contractor's (AGC) Steel Erection training, Sept. 25-26, in Boise. More than 170 participants took advantage of that training. Washington Group representatives also participated in the Chicago Construction Safety Council last April, as well as speaking and exhibiting at OSHA's 2nd Annual Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, VA, in June. The renewed Alliance calls for continuing education, training, outreach and communication efforts. For example, Washington Group will present the Economics of Safety in 2004 at the Denver and Boston Contractors forums and will also be a site sponsor for AGC's Fall Protection Training next April in Boise. Additionally, OSHA and Washington Group will continue the Job Shadowing Program developed during the Alliance's initial implementation, which includes the Group's Safety Qualified Supervisor Training Program, and OSHA's course for the construction industry.
