CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Some 500 landscaping contractors across Ohio will be providing their workers a safer summer season in 2004 with the application of a safety alliance signed between the Ohio Landscapers Association and the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration this fall. The first meeting to detail specific goals for member contractors was held yesterday in Cleveland, as the two groups kicked off an alliance designed to reach an end result of "a safer workforce in the landscape industry," according to OSHA Area Director Rob Medlock, Cleveland. "This industry is now on OSHA's strategic management plan for high incident/high severity incidents," Medlock explained. "By working with this association we can provide member contractors with information on OSHA requirements on a proactive basis. This positive approach to preventing accidents rather than investigating tragedy is the best way for all of us to help workers return safely to their families at the end of each work shift." Executive Director Sandy Munley, Ohio Landscapers Association (OLA), added "We are very excited to work closely with OSHA in this innovative program. Our association's primary mission is to provide information and education for our contractors, so this is a perfect opportunity to further that goal." The OSHA and OLA Alliance will achieve its goals through implementation of safety and health programs, training, participation in conferences and forums, regular columns in OLA's monthly publication, "The Growing Concern," and sharing of best practices. Participation in this Alliance Program is voluntary for landscaping contractors and sub-contractors. The Alliance will remain in effect for 18 months.
