Program Sign Alliance to Protect Health Care Workers NEW YORK -- Improving workplace safety and health for health care workers is the goal of a newly established alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships of labor unions and employers. "This alliance is an example of Secretary Elaine L. Chao's commitment to foster compliance assistance for workers and employers to improve health and safety for workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "This alliance focuses on how to prevent worker exposures to chemical hazards, workplace violence and ergonomic injuries in health care settings." NYSNA, with more than 34,000 members, is New York's largest union and professional association exclusively representing the interests of registered nurses and is recognized nationwide as a trendsetter in improving workplace safety and health conditions in the healthcare industry. NYSNA is a constituent of the American Nurses Association (ANA) and of the United American Nurses (UAN), AFL-CIO. Through this statewide alliance, OSHA and NYSNA will develop workplace safety and health "Best Practices Guides" and provide members and others in the industry with information, guidance, training and access to resources that will protect employees' health and safety. New York State's OSHA On-Site Consultation Program will provide free services to employers in the health care industry to improve safety and health conditions. A joint OSHA, NYSNA and New York State on-site consultation implementation team made up of representatives from each organization will develop a plan of action, determine working procedures and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. In addition they regularly will share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance, which will remain in effect for two years. The eight OSHA area offices participating in the alliance are in Albany, Avenel, Buffalo, Long Island, Bayside, Manhattan, Syracuse and Tarrytown.
