Will focus on Spanish-speaking workforce in residential construction WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) joined with OSHA today in an Alliance to further occupational safety and health in the residential construction industry. The Alliance will focus on the industry's Spanish-speaking workforce. "This Alliance is a critical step forward in providing safety and health information and training to Spanish-speaking workers," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "They continue to suffer disproportionately higher fatality rates than others in this country. I believe the collaborative actions we're taking with NAHB today will produce more positive results in ensuring safe and healthful workplaces for all workers in this important industry which is the objective of both NAHB and OSHA." Added NAHB President Kent Conine: "Through this Alliance, we will be able to leverage our association's resources and focus greater attention on addressing the educational needs of the residential construction industry workforce -- particularly the needs of the Spanish-speaking workforce, which is the fastest growing segment of our industry's labor pool." OSHA and NAHB have agreed to the development and presentation of training and education programs and workshops on residential construction industry issues, emphasizing the Spanish-speaking workforce. Both organizations will also explore the feasibility of developing a comprehensive safety training course specific to residential construction similar to OSHA's 30-hour construction course. NAHB will assist OSHA in identifying safety and health issues that can be addressed in electronic tools available on OSHA's website and other electronic compliance assistance products specific to the industry. OSHA and NAHB will develop and disseminate information through various media, including NAHB's Nation's Building News, both organization's websites, and affiliated trade associations' newsletters. NAHB will also share its English/Spanish construction safety publications with OSHA regional and area offices. OSHA and NAHB will also work with various Hispanic contractors associations and other Alliance program participants to promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health, focusing on residential construction safety issues that impact the Spanish-speaking workforce. The National Association of Home Builders is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing more than 205,000 residential home building and remodeling industry members, and is affiliated with more than 800 state and local home builders associations around the country.
