HEALTH NURSES, INC. FORM ALLIANCE WASHINGTON -- A new Alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (AAOHN) targets workplace violence, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and emergency management in order to improve workplace safety and health. "This Alliance provides a unique opportunity to work with frontline occupational safety and health professionals to address workplace violence, ergonomics and other safety and health issues," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "By working together with AAOHN, we can achieve a greater impact in improving workplace safety and health and reducing injuries, illnesses and fatalities." "We're very excited that our relationship with OSHA over the past few years has culminated into an official alliance," said AAOHN President Deborah V. DiBenedetto. "We look forward to a dynamic relationship that will help advance the mission of both organizations, and help improve the health, safety and productivity of the nation's workforce." Under the agreement, OSHA and AAOHN will use their joint expertise to help small and large businesses promote employee wellness and prevent workplace illnesses and injuries, particularly in the areas of emergency management, MSDs, and workplace violence. The participants will also respond to employee and employer concerns and help develop new programs. OSHA and AAOHN will work together on outreach and communication, including the dissemination of health and safety information and guidance directly to businesses, and the development of electronic assistance tools for OSHA's web page. In addition, AAOHN chapters will be encouraged to build relationships with OSHA's regional and area offices and act as resources for OSHA's training institute and education centers. A team of OSHA and AAOHN representatives will meet at least quarterly to develop an action plan, determine working procedures, and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. OSHA will also offer the opportunity for representatives of the Occupational Safety and Health State Plan Association and the Association of State Consultation Projects to participate in the Alliance. This is OSHA's 25th alliance to promote safety and health in the workplace and the 14th alliance with a particular focus on reducing exposure to ergonomic hazards.
