TRADE NEWS RELEASE February 27, 2003 Contact: Frank Meilinger Phone: (202) 693-1999 OSHA, National Arborist Association Form Alliance Will Focus on Reducing Tree Service Hazards WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and National Arborist Association (NAA) have formed an Alliance to promote safer and more healthful working conditions for workers in the tree service industry, OSHA Administrator John Henshaw announced today. "This Alliance is a great opportunity to increase outreach and education that will help strengthen worker safety in the tree care industry," said Henshaw. "We are pleased to join with NAA to enhance communication and develop training that will better protect workers in this industry." Cynthia Mills, CAE, President of the National Arborist Association wholeheartedly endorsed this historic Alliance between OSHA and the tree care industry. "The Alliance will help to further our joint objective of improving safety in the tree care industry through enhanced communication about safety issues, development of safety programs, and an ongoing dialogue and commitment to work together. NAA is dedicated to working with OSHA and salutes their willingness to partner with industry." OSHA and NAA will work together to develop and deliver training on topics such as struck-by prevention, fall prevention, awareness of electrical hazards during tree removal, and of the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) tree care standard. The participants will jointly develop presentations for NAA conferences and OSHA will expand a pilot training seminar developed by OSHA's Regional headquarters in Boston on compliance with OSHA standards. The Alliance calls for the participants to work together on outreach and communication, including fostering the ongoing NAA-OSHA dialogue on regulatory and compliance trends in the tree care industry. OSHA and NAA will develop and disseminate information about safety resources available to the tree care industry, such as OSHA's consultation program and compliance assistance specialists, and NAA's mentoring program. A team of OSHA and NAA representatives will meet at least quarterly to develop an action plan, determine working procedures, and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. OSHA will also offer the opportunity for representatives of the Occupational Safety and Health State Plan Association and the Association of State Consultation Projects to participate in the Alliance.
