U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today issued the following statement commending the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) adoption of a resolution affirming the principles of the No Child Left Behind Act:
"ALEC and its members have been steadfast supporters of education reform and No Child Left Behind. They understand that for our country to remain economically, civically and democratically viable, we must provide a quality education for children of every color, background and ZIP code.
"With No Child Left Behind, educators and policymakers made a commitment to close the achievement gap. Today, that commitment is paying off. Test scores are rising, and more minority students are catching up to their peers than ever before, especially in the early grades. By continuing to set high standards and hold ourselves accountable for reaching them, we will ensure America remains the world's leader in innovation and opportunity."
