The Justice Attaché is a senior DOJ official who serves as the primary liaison to the members of the Iraqi judiciary, including the Higher Judicial Council, the Central Criminal Court of Iraq, and the Major Crimes Courts throughout the country. The Justice Attaché is responsible for coordinating the efforts of the military, the State Department, the Justice Department and the international community with the Iraqi judiciary and other relevant GoI ministries that engage in rule of law efforts in Iraq.

The Justice Attaché is also charged with responsibility of coordinating, counseling and overseeing the various Department of Justice components working under the Chief of Mission in Iraq. These components include the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, ICITAP, and OPDAT. The Justice Attaché also coordinates efforts of Rule of Law advisors located at the various Provincial Reconstruction Teams.
