Taken Question Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC October 30, 2008 Question Taken at October 30, 2008 Daily Press Briefing China: Olympics/List of Nine U.S. Athletes
Question: What do we know about the Chinese government creating a list of nine U.S. athletes and one assistant coach it thought might cause trouble at the Olympic Games? What is our reaction to this? Answer: We have seen media reports of such a list of U.S. athletes being provided to the U.S. Olympic Committee prior to the Olympic Games. During the run-up to the Olympics, we discussed with Chinese authorities their concerns about the potential for protest actions by Olympics athletes or others attending the Games. At the time we made multiple representations to Chinese authorities regarding the importance of respecting freedom of expression, and we continue to stand by these views. For further information or questions, we would refer you to the U.S. Olympic Committee. 2008/926 |
