Iran: Update on Status of American Citizens (Taken Question)

Question: When was the last time the U.S. requested access to the American citizens detained in Iran, and when did you last request information on missing American Robert Levinson? Have you received any responses to those requests?

Answer: We last contacted the Iranians concerning the whereabouts of American citizen Robert Levinson on July 3 through the Swiss, our protecting power for consular matters in Iran. We have yet to receive a response from the Iranians on this request.

Tehran also has refused to respond to our request for consular access to the detained Iranian-American citizens, delivered to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 30. The Swiss regularly raise the cases of the detained American citizens on our behalf during their meetings with Iranian officials, most recently on July 3. We have not received a response from Tehran on the issue.
