Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC March 17, 2006
Continued Detention of Akbar GanjiThe United States remains concerned about Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji, who has been imprisoned since 2000 for his reporting on the government’s links to the murders of 80 dissidents in Iran and abroad. His unjust sentence was due to end on March 17, but the Iranian government continues to imprison him.
The United States calls on the government of Iran to release Akbar Ganji and to end its abuse of the fundamental freedoms of Iran’s citizens.
