New International Compact Supports Democracy in Iraq
Secretary Rice (May 4): "We've just completed a very successful meeting of Iraq's neighbors in an expanded format with the Group of Eight, the G-8, and the Permanent Five members of the Security Council of the United Nations. ....The international community took its place alongside Iraq and its neighbors to commit, as it did yesterday through the International Compact, to a set of obligations as Iraqis move forward on their obligations, but also to continue the process to foster international support for the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Maliki."

Secretary Rice traveled to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt for the launch of the International Compact with Iraq and the Expanded Neighbors of Iraq ministerial. She held several bilateral meetings. While in Sharm el-Sheikh, Secretary Rice discussed ways to support Iraq in its economic reform efforts and move forward with the stabilization of Iraq and transition to full Iraqi self-reliance.
