Secretary Rice Visits U.S. Mission Personnel in Iraq Secretary Rice (Feb. 17): "...this is an essential mission for the security and well-being of the United States of America. I know we talk a great deal about helping the Iraqi people to find their way out of violence, out of tyranny, to democracy and to living together in peace and prosperity. And that's a noble cause, and America has always been at its best when it uses its power for noble causes. Secretary Rice traveled to Iraq, Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Amman, Jordan; and Berlin, Germany. Secretary Rice arrived for an unannounced visit in Baghdad on Saturday morning and met with Iraqi and American officials. In Jerusalem she held bilateral meetings with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders, as well as a trilateral meeting with President Abbas and Prime Minister Olmert on February 19. In Amman Secretary Rice met with the King Abdullah of Jordan and other members of the Jordanian government. In addition to a meeting of the Quartet in Berlin, Secretary Rice met with Foreign Minister Steinmeier and Chancellor Merkel. The Quartet discussed the recent agreement reached by the Palestinian government in Saudi Arabia and the next steps in the implementing the Road Map.
