Secretary Rice: Travel to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, August 24-26, 2008

Secretary Rice Travels to Israel and the Palestinian Territories
Secretary Rice (Aug. 26):
"... I will start on the question of the gaps between the sides. First of all, I am very heartened by the fact that the negotiations are serious, and they are intensive. And, in fact, I believe that the parties have succeeded in moving their understandings of what needs to be achieved. And, indeed, they’re positioned somewhat closer together over this period of time. We are certainly not anywhere near the point that we were a year ago, when we didn't even have an active process for the addressing of gaps."
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Israel and the Palestinian Territories on August 24. There, she met with senior Israeli and Palestinian Authority officials to discuss a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, including ongoing efforts to create positive and lasting peace in the region and progress towards the shared goal of a peace agreement in 2008.

Remarks made during the trip
--08/26/08 Remarks With Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
--08/26/08 Remarks With Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni
--08/25/08 Remarks En Route Tel Aviv, Israel
