Under Secretary Burns: Travel to Middle East

At the request of the President and Secretary Rice, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns visited Israel August 15-17, 2007. He met with Prime Minister Olmert, Foreign Minister Livni, Defense Minister Barak, and other Israeli officials. He signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the new U.S. $30 billion, ten-year military assistance package. He also continued discussions on regional security, including the challenge posed by Iran. Under Secretary Burns then met with Palestinian Authority leaders regarding the development of a political horizon and American humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
