Under Secretary Burns: Travel to London and South AsiaUnder Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns departed June 21 for meetings in London, England. On June 22 he met counterparts from UN Security Council permanent member states and others to discuss UN reform. He also met with his counterparts from Japan and Australia as a part of the U.S.-Japan-Australia strategic dialogue. On June 23rd, Under Secretary Burns accompanied Secretary Rice at the G-8 foreign ministers meetings.
Under Secretary Burns is greeted by Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran of India in New Delhi, June 24, 2005. | Under Secretary Burns then traveled to India and Bangladesh. In New Delhi, he met with senior government officials and political leaders to discuss developments in the U.S.-Indian strategic partnership in advance of Prime Minister Singh’s Washington visit. In Dhaka, he discussed the political climate and bilateral issues of mutual interest in meetings with government officials, political party leaders and members of civil society.
Under Secretary Burns returned to Washington, D.C., on June 27.
