Cheryl Atkinson currently serves as Administrator of the Office of Workforce Security. In that position, she is responsible for federal oversight of the federal-state Unemployment Insurance program.

Prior to joining the U.S. Department of Labor, Ms. Atkinson served as the Unemployment Insurance Director for the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) which represents state officials responsible for the administration of state and federal unemployment insurance laws, public employment offices, and federal job training programs. At NASWA, she was responsible for coordinating development of organizational policies on unemployment insurance and related issues and served as a senior advisor to the Executive Director and elected leadership of NASWA.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Atkinson served as a program and budget analyst for the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. She was also a management analyst and local office manager with the District of Columbia Unemployment Compensation Board.

Ms. Atkinson graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.
