Training

There are several ways for you to obtain training on the Westlaw Databases. A description of the different types of training is available on the Westlaw homepage at www.westlaw.com. Go to the tool bar at the top and click on "Westlaw Training."

Here is a brief description of each type of training:

  • Web-based training sessions (http://west.thomson.com/products/westlaw/training/web.asp) are a series of 12 lessons that take 5-10 minutes to complete. These lessons cover the basics of signing on, the four basic Westlaw search techniques, using KeyCite to verify your citations, and how to print/save your results.

  • Telephone training sessions (http://west.thomson.com/products/westlaw/training/phone.asp) are taught by licensed attorneys. Sessions are tailored to your experience level and research needs. To set up an appointment you can call 1-800-328-0109 or send an e-mail to support@westgroup.com.
  • On-site training sessions (http://west.thomson.com/products/westlaw/training/onsite.asp) can be held either at your office or at a West Information Center. The seminars are custom-tailored to your organization and are held on a limited basis. For more information you can call 1-800-937-8327 or send an e-mail to support@westgroup.com.
  • Westlaw Training Seminars (http://west.thomson.com/training/training.asp) are held at Westlaw training centers and cover predetermined topics such as ALR, AmJur, secondary sources, government contracts, or immigration law. There are also advanced classes for specific groups such as legal assistants, paralegals, government users or small firm practitioners. You first need to select the center and then you can review the seminars alphabetically by subject or by date.
  • Westlaw Master Classes (http://west.thomson.com/store/product.asp?product%5Fid=Westlaw+Master+Classes&catalog%5Fname=wgstore) are a series of courses that teach high level research techniques. There are three components (workbook, presentation and exam) to each class that you can cover at your own pace. Some of the classes are Advanced Legal Research, Company Information, News and Business Information, and Statutory and Legislative Research.
