Federal Judicial Center Publications

A past tip on the Federal Judicial Center (FJC) makes mention of publications available on the FJC website. This tip focuses exclusively on FJC publications. While the features described below also provide information about videos available from the FJC, only full-text publications available free of charge are discussed.

To locate publications on the FJC website, click on the link for Publications & videos in the center of the FJC homepage. This directs you to the Publications & Video catalog search page.

Regardless of the search option you choose (including keyword), all resources retrieved include the title, an author’s name (if applicable), the publication date, number of pages, brief description, and a link to further information (the “Read more” link). When you click on the Read-More link that appears after the publication’s description, you will see:

  • Link or download (to the full-text in PDF format; available for print resources only)
  • Table of contents
  • More in this Collection or Series
  • More on the Subject(s)

There are four search options as follows:

  • Search by Keyword or Phrase: Use the “search box” in the middle portion of the Publications & Video catalog search page. You can limit your search by Field (All Fields, or by Author or by Title) or by Format (Publication or Video or All). On the left side of the Publications & videos main page, you will see links for three other search options-

  • Browse by Subject: Select this option and you are directed to a page that displays a list of hyperlinked topics in alphabetical order. Topics include Admiralty/Maritime Law, Bankruptcy -- Business (and other bankruptcy subtopics), Constitutional Law, Employment Discrimination, Expert Witnesses, Securities Law and Litigation, Social Security, and many others. If you click on Securities Law and Litigation, you will see a list of five documents displayed. A sample title:
