Endangered Species Program
Candidate Notice of Review (CNOR)

Published on December 6, 2007, the most recent candidate notice of review identified 280 species that are candidates for listing under the Endangered Species Act.

In this CNOR, we removed four species from candidate status. The removal of two of these species, the surprising cave beetle and basalt daisy (Erigeron basalticus), highlighted the important role conservation efforts play in reducing risks to species not yet listed. The Surprising Cave beetle in Kentucky was removed as a candidate after an assessment found that the species’ range was larger than originally described and the threats to its continued existence had decreased. In addition, Mammoth Cave National Park entered into a 15-year agreement to conserve the cave beetle and its habitat, which includes Surprising Cave and three other caves in the park. The basalt daisy, a plant found in Washington, was removed from the candidate list due to conservation efforts and information indicating the species is more abundant than once believed. Surveying and monitoring led to the identification of two additional populations of this plant and the most recent survey further affirmed stable numbers suggested by earlier surveys, leading us to conclude that this species no longer meets the definition of a candidate [click here to learn more about these agreements].

We added five species:

  • Las Vegas buckwheat, a plant species found in Clark and Lincoln, Counties, Nevada;
  • New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, a mammal species found in Apache County, Arizona; a small portion of Las Animas County, Colorado; and in Colfax, Mora, Otero, and Sandoval Counties, New Mexico;
  • Huachuca/Canelo Distinct Population Segment of the Arizona treefrog, an amphibian found in the Huachuca Mountains and adjacent Canelo Hills in Arizona and Rancho Los Fresnos in north-central Sonora, Mexico;
  • Laurel dace, a fish species found in Bledsoe and Rhea Counties, Tennessee; and
  • San Bernardino springsnail, a snail found in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico.

Some of our candidate species:

Caught on the water via dipnet in Kachemak Bay, Alaska, this is a juvenile Kittlitz's murrelet, a candidate species. Biologists catch, weigh, and measure murrelets. Recording the presence of the species at sea provides an index of productivity. Kelsey Sullivan, FWS, is holding the bird. Photo by Alyson McKnight. Dubautia waialealae, is a plant found in bogs on the Waialeale summit and the other end of the Alakai Plateau on the island of Kauai. Fewer than 800 individuals exist. Photo by M. Bruegmann, FWS

The Altamaha River Basin is home to a diversity of endemic mussel species including the Altamaha spinymussel, a candidate for listing. Research funds that became available when the spinymussel became a candidate in 2000 have been used to conduct more than 370 hours of surveys at 130 sites in all the historic localities in the Altamaha River, as well as the Ohoopee and Ocmulgee Rivers. Biologists from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, Rayonier, and Georgia Power Company confirmed the imperiled status of the species with the collection of only 31 live spinymussels. The good news is that the surveys identified a few sites where the Altamaha spinymussel is still reproducing. These areas will become the focus for protection efforts and further research.
