The Karner Blue Butterfly: Protected Through Partnerships
A partnership of federal, state, local and private cooperators is working to protect the endangered Karner blue butterfly in remaining parts of its New York habitat. A grant provided through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Recovery Land Acquisition program is helping the partnership acquire additional acres of increasingly rare undisturbed land in the Albany Pine Bush area. "This partnership of local, state, public and private entities in Albany and Saratoga serves (as) a national model for effective, sensible and collaborative environmental protection," according to U.S. Congressman Mike McNulty. The partnership includes the State of New York, through its Department of Environmental Conservation, Town of Wilton, N.Y., The Nature Conservancy, Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park and the Northeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
