Secretary Rice: Travel to Brazil and Chile, March 13-15, 2008

Cooperation With Brazil
Secretary Rice (Mar. 13):
"We have talked about the issues of the region, in particular, our desires for a region that is peaceful, prosperous, in which there’s social justice and economic prosperity as well as consolidated and strengthened democracy. We’ve had a chance to touch on our bio-fuels agreement, but of course, we have more work to do there; and also on the joint desire of our presidents to see a Doha round that can be concluded successfully because, in many ways, there is nothing more important that we can do for developing countries than to have a world trading system that supports development and sustains markets for both developed and developing countries to prosper."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Brazil and Chile from March 13 to 15, 2008.

The Secretary went to Brasilia where she met with President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva and Foreign Minister Celso Amorim to discuss a broad range of bilateral and regional issues, including our cooperation to advance biofuels. The Secretary also visited Salvador da Bahia.

In Santiago, Secretary Rice met with President Michelle Bachelet and Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley to discuss issues of mutual interest, particularly the deepening of our bilateral relationship through partnerships between U.S. and Chilean institutions, such as the partnership between Chile and the State of California.

This visit underscores the United States’ robust relationship with these two strategic regional partners.
