 SecuritySecurity Assistance to the Foreign Diplomatic Community Security is an important part of the mission of the Office of Foreign Missions. We work closely with law enforcement organizations within the Department of State as well as federal and local law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the foreign missions and their personnel.
Within the State Department, Diplomatic Security has the primary responsibility to ensure that protection is extended to all foreign officials and their missions across the United States . DS' Protective Liaison Division coordinates this protection and related services. DS provides protection to foreign missions through agreements with state and local law enforcement authorities. Special agents in Washington , DC , and 23 field offices throughout the United States are available 24 hours daily to provide liaison services and security assistance to all foreign offices residing in the United States . Foreign embassies and consulates should contact the DS field office located nearest to the mission.

In addition to coordinating protective security measures, the Protective Liaison Division offers briefings and seminars, specialized training and consultation on a broad range of security-related topics, and works closely with the Office of Foreign Missions to ensure the safety and security of foreign missions and their personnel.
