| ![]() Transatlantic Economic CouncilThe centerpiece of the April 2007 U.S.-EU Summit was the Framework for Advancing Transatlantic Economic Integration, signed by President Bush, German Chancellor Merkel, and European Commission President Barroso. The Framework brings a new political impetus to promoting already strong U.S.-EU economic ties and working together on a wide range of economic issues. The Framework builds upon the 2005 Economic Initiative, launched after we conducted the 2004 Stakeholders Dialogue with industry and civil society. The Framework has put the United States and European Union on a joint path toward further transatlantic economic integration in regulatory approaches, intellectual property rights enforcement, innovation and technology policy, competitive financial markets, investment promotion, energy, and enhanced trade, travel and security. In keeping with the political commitment in the Framework to manage our cooperation, the Summit leaders established a new Cabinet-level Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC) to provide guidance and oversight for the implementation of the Framework. The first formal TEC meeting, including several Cabinet secretaries and EU commissioners, took place November 9. Subsequent meetings will occur semi-annually.
