Alphabetical List of Chiefs of Mission and Principal Officials, 1778-2005

This alphabetical list covers all persons included in Principal Officers and Chiefs of Mission of the Department of State.  Entries for each person consist of full name (when known) dates of birth and death (when known), and a chronological list of each position held.  Career members of the Foreign Service are so indicated as are non-career appointees.  Country names are those in use at the time of appointment.  Positions in brackets indicate that the person, although nominated or commissioned, did not serve under that appointment.
